Safety Rules: Lagos Reads Riot Act to Private Schools

Lagos State government has warned proprietors of private primary and secondary schools operating in the state against the increasing cases of accident and hazard, which have either claimed their students’ lives and cost them irreparable damage.
The state government also lamented the growing rate of death among pupils and students in the state private primary and secondary schools, resulting from the compromise of safety measures.

Environment: Prepare for Heavy Rains, Flooding This Year – NIMET

Nigerians have been asked to prepare for heavy rainfall and flooding in 2013 which could be the same or worse than the 2012 episode.

Presenting the 2013 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction for this year and the release of the 2012 Nigerian Climate Review Bulletin in Abuja yesterday, director-general of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Dr. Anthony Anuforom, said that this year's rainfall prediction pattern in most parts of Nigeria would likely to be similar to that of 2012.

Environment: NIMET predicts Heavy  Rainfall, Flooding in Sokoto, Kwara, Others

With memories of last year’s flooding still fresh, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has predicted heavy rainfall for year 2013.

The agency’s Director General, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, Saturday, in Abuja, said this year’s rainfall pattern would not be different from what the country witnessed last year.

ICT: Gov, Minister Disagree Publicly on Supply of Schools’ Computers

Computers were supplied. No, they weren’t. Thus the drama played out, Saturday, during the National Good Governance Tour of Rivers State, as Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, and State Governor, Rotimi Amechi, disagreed on whether the Federal Government supplied computers to 10 secondary schools each across the 36 states of the federation.

Health: Nigeria’s HIV Resource Centre will enhance Research - Experts
Nigeria has set up an HIV/AIDS centre to ensure better coordination of researches into the endemic in the West African country.
The centre, funded under the Enhancing National Response (ENR) programme of the Department for International Department (DFID), aims to make HIV/AIDS related researches like Nigeria AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey (NARHS), Modes of Transmission (MOT) Study, Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey (IBBSS), among others, available to stakeholders.

A new set of 93 management trainees  have successfully completed the third edition of the banking school programme of the UBA Academy as part of the bank’s pre-requisite for gainful employment in the institution.

It was so bad that the former Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Dora Akunyili called for the banning of sachet water because of the amount of waste generated.

Health: Yaro Warns against Diversion of Drugs, Hospital Equipment

Kaduna State governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Yero Thursday warned against diversion of drugs and hospital equipment meant for primary health centres in the state, saying that anyone caught indulging in such corrupt and retrogressive acts will be dealt with.

Speaking at the commissioning of  drugs, consumables and hospital equipment worth over N600 million donated by the Partnership for Transforming of Health Systems,  otherwise known as PATHS 2, Yero  also said he will hold officials of the state ministry of health responsible for any foul play in the distribution of the items to the various health centres.

Infrastructure: NACCIMA wants govt to boost infrastructure with foreign reserves

The Director-General, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dr. John Osemede, has urged the Federal Government to invest a part of Nigeria’s foreign reserve on infrastructure.

Environment: FG asks NIMET to take precautionary measures

Following the flooding that wreaked havoc in 28 states of the federation in 2012, the Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Metrological Agency to put precautionary measures in place to prevent recurrence this year.

Health: DESOPADEC healthcare beneficiaries hail Uduaghan
People of Ethiope West Local Government Area of the Delta State who benefited from the services and gesture of the Urhobo Commissioners in DESOPADEC extended their appreciation to the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, and Dr. Henry Ofa JP; for bringing free healthcare services to their door steps.

Security: FG Beefs up Security around Polio Workers

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, on Thursday disclosed that the Federal Government had given special priority to the security of polio vaccinators and all other health workers across the country. 

Also on Thursday, Kano State Government stated that it had donated the sum of N500,000 each to the families of the 10 health workers, who were killed recently by unknown gunmen and N250,000 to four others, who sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack.

Health: US Embassy Outlines Condition for Baby Delivery in America
Contrary to the widely held notions in the polity that to deliver a baby in the United States, a pregnant woman has to conceal her pregnancy during her visa interview and while entering the US, or she has to travel before her pregnancy starts to show, the US Embassy has clarified that it is okay to decide to have a baby in the country.

This is against the backdrop of the practise where some Nigerians deliberately lie during visa interviews in their bid to secure automatic US citizenship for their children.

Labour: DPR seals off seven filling stations in Rivers

The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and  Air Transport Service Senior Staff Association (ATSSSAN) have given the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) 14 days ultimatum to pay the workers the enhanced salary scheme or they would ground their services in the agency.

But NAMA has said that a committee had been set up to look into the grey areas of the new condition of service with the labour leaders in order to have acceptable document for the benefit of the workers and the agency’s management.

Education: Sultan, Alaafin urge reintroduction of history in schools

Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, have called for the reintroduction of History in schools and the preservation of the nation’s culture. They spoke on Thursday when the Sultan visited the Alaafin in his palace in Oyo town.

The decision of the Federal Government to remove History from the nation’s educational curriculum, they said, was wrong and uncalled for.

MDGs: Govt. needs N360bn to meet water supply target

For the country to meet its Millennium Development Goal of adequate water supply by 2015, the government will need to expend N360bn annually on development projects in the sector, the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, has said.
According to her, the sum will be needed annually for the next three to five years to meet the nation’s water supply and sanitation needs.

Sustainability: Guiness restates commitment to Sustainable Development

In a bid to ensure sustainable   human capital development through education, Guinness Nigeria Plc has reiterated its commitment to giving back to its host communities.

This was made known by the Director of Corporate Relations, Guinness Nigeria, Mr. Sesan Sobowale, during the presentation of scholarships to 10 beneficiaries of a comprehensive technical training programme at the Institute for Industrial Technology, Lagos.

Investment: Ropeways Transport floats N81bn Cable Car mass transist system

Ropeways Transport Limited is investing $500 million (about N81 billion) to launch a cable car mass urban transit system in the nation’s commercial capital, Lagos.

The cable car transit system, the first in the quest in Nigeria to provide commuters affordable, safe, timely and stress-free mode of transportation, particularly in urban centres like Lagos, is being floated by a company owned by Dapo Olumide, former managing director of Virgin Nigeria Airlines; Yemi Osinbajo, former attorney-general and commissioner for justice, Lagos State and Yemi Ogunbiyi, proprietor, Tanus Communications Limited.

Environment: Flood, fire displace 3m people in South-South region, says NEMA

More than 3.3 million people have been displaced by floods and fire incidents in the South-South region of the country in 2012, an official of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

The South-South zonal coordinator of the agency, Umesi Emenike, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Labour:  NDE trains 79,000 apprentices, empowers 360 in ogun

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) said it trained about 79,000 apprentices resident in Ogun State in various trades, under the directorate’s apprenticeship and skills acquisition programmes and directly empowered 360 apprentices under its National Open Apprenticeship Skills (NOAS) scheme.

The 79,000 apprentices trained in various trades, including auto-mechanics, radio and television repairing, vulcanising, welding, panel beating, carpentry, barbing, tailoring, hairdressing among others, according to Adebowale Ologbenla, the state coordinator of NDE, are Ogun State residents not necessarily indigenes.

Health: Local Govt. immunises kids

As part of efforts to save babies from avoidable death arising from deadly diseases such as measles, smallpox, polio, the wife of the chairman of Ikosi Isheri Local Development Area, Mrs. Omolola Oyesanya, has begun sensitisation and awareness campaign on polio eradication in the council.

The polio eradication programme which is meant for children between the ages of 0 and five was the flag-off of the first round of the 2013 National Immunisation and it is expected to go round the council area.

Philanthropy: Ajimobi’s wife feeds 500 needy women

In continuation of the Ajumose food bank initiative for needy women in Oyo State, wife of the state governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi has distributed foodstuff to over 500 women selected from Ibadan South West Local Government Area of the state.

The food items, which included yam flour, rice, beans, sugar and milk, among others, were distributed to the beneficiaries including the aged, orphans and other less-privileged persons as a way of alleviating poverty in the state.

Kano State Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has commissioned a multi- million Naira Poliomyelitis Centre at Nassarawa Hospital in the state capital.

Investment: APM Terminals invests $135m in Lagos Project
APM Terminals, the Danish concessionaire in charge of Apapa Container Terminal, has concluded plans to invest fresh $135 million (N21.3 billion) to expand its capacity at the port.
This is coming at a time when the entire shipping community is in need of an efficient port facility that can support the already existing Apapa and Tin-Can Island port facilities that are currently over stretched.
